No. 8 Trinity stays unbeaten with sweep of baseball







HARTFORD, Conn. -- Senior Chandler Barnard (Lubbock, Texas) homered and earned the win on the mound in the first game and senior tri-captain Michael Regan (West Roxbury, Mass.) allowed one run and eight hits with three strikeouts and no walks in the second game to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 10/10-3/3 doubleheader sweep against the visiting Bates College Bobcats in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) East Division baseball action Sunday afternoon.

Trinity, ranked No. 8 in the nation, improves to a best-ever 19-0 overall and 6-0 in the NESCAC East, while the Bobcats drop to 4-9 overall and 1-5 in the division.

Senior Sean VanderVliet (Meriden, N.H.) started for Bates in Game 1, allowed six runs over four innings and took the loss to drop to 3-1 on the season. Bates scored one in the fourth when sophomore Josh Linscott (Portland, Maine) led off and was hit by a pitch, and later came home on senior Denis Hogan's (Franklin, Mass.) sacrifice fly. The Bobcats added two in the seventh when Hogan doubled after senior Casey McCormack (Keene, N.H.) drew a walk to lead off. Senior Brian Mahoney (Sudbury, Mass.) drove in McCormack with a single, and Hogan came home on a fielder's choice by senior Erik Hood (Berlin, N.H.).

First-year righthander Ryan Heide (Medfield, Mass.) got his first starting nod of the season for Game 2 and took the loss to drop to 0-2. Bates rapped out 12 hits in the game but left nine men on base. McCormack hit a pair of doubles and went 3-4, while senior Brian Buckley (Andover, Mass.) went 2-5, Hood went 2-4 and first-year Jake Simon (Waterford, Conn.) went 2-3 with a run and an RBI.

Simon scored in the second inning with a leadoff single, advancing to third on singles by Linscott and McCormack, followed by an RBI sac fly by Hogan.

The Bobcats plated two runs in the eighth when Buckley and Hood led off with back-to-back singles. Senior Rob Patton (Darien, Conn.) doubled to score Buckley and Hood came home on a sac fly by Simon.

First-year Paul Chiampa (Bryantville, Mass.) threw 1 2/3 innings of relief, allowing two runs, and junior Chuck Murphy-Romboletti (Holyoke, Mass.) came on for the final two innings, allowing one unearned run.

Bates will next host Middlebury for a three-game series this weekend, beginning with a nine-inning game Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
