LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College baseball team took a 10-1 lead and defeated Thomas College 10-4 in a non-league game on Wednesday at Leahey Field. The game was originally scheduled to be played at Thomas but was moved to Bates, with Bates as the "visiting" team, due to field conditions at Thomas.

It was the third win in a row and fourth in the past five games for the Bobcats (7-10), while the Terriers dropped to 1-13.

Bates banged out 15 hits in support of senior starter Ben Shwartz (Mattapoisett, Mass.; 2-0), who gave up one unearned run in five innings, and four Bates relievers, who pitched one inning apiece. Shwartz allowed two hits and two walks and struck out four Terriers. First-year Demetrios Gatzogiannis (Wells, Maine), junior Ryan Horvath (Fort Myers, Fla.) and sophomore Alex Gallant (Bangor, Maine) all pitched shutout innings before Thomas scored three runs in the ninth inning.

After Thomas scored a run in the first inning to go up 1-0 on an RBI double by Tom Desjardins, Bates scored three runs in the third and three more in the fourth off of Thomas starter Tyler Miles, who allowed 11 hits and two walks in 4 1/3 innings of work before giving way to five Thomas relievers.

Sophomore Noah Lynd (Meriden, N.H.) walked to lead off the third, and advanced to second on sophomore Noah Burke's (Appleton, Maine) sacrifice bunt. Junior Tom Beaton (West Newbury, Mass.) singled to push Lynd to third. Sophomore Pat Murphy (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) then reached on a fielder's choice that was a potential inning-ending double-play ball for Thomas, and the Bobcats made them pay when sophomore Chris Burke (Andover, Mass.) lined a single to center to score Lynd. Sophomore Jake Simon (Waterford, Conn.) followed with a double to center to score Chris Burke and Murphy with the go-ahead runs.

Bates added three more in the fourth on RBI singles by Noah Burke, Murphy and Simon for a 6-1 lead.

The Bobcats made it 9-1 with three runs in the sixth off of Chris Farrar. Murphy and Chris Burke reached on a walk and a single, respectively, then pulled a double steal with reigning NESCAC Player of the Week Gordy Webb (Hampden, Maine) at the plate. Webb dusted himself off after apparently getting hit by a pitch only to have it called a foul tip, and on the next pitch he roped a two-run double down the left-field line. First-year Mike Ciummei (Acton, Mass.) later scored Webb on a double to right-center.

Bates added a run in the seventh when Noah Burke doubled down the left-field line and later came home on a wild pitch.

The Terriers got back on the board with three runs on five hits in the ninth. Taylor Livingston dropped an RBI single into shallow right field, and Mike Busa made it 10-4 with a two-run single up the middle.

Bates will host defending NCAA Division III champion Trinity in a three-game series this weekend, starting with a nine-inning game on Friday at 3 p.m.

BOX SCORE: Bates 10, Thomas 4
