CARROLLTON, Ga. -- The Bates College baseball team again made a respectable showing on Friday at the University of West Georgia, dropping both ends of a doubleheader against the Division 2 Wolves by scores of 7-3 in Game 1 and 11-10 in Game 2, a day after losing 12-11 to West Georgia.

In Game 1, the Bobcats (2-4) took a 3-2 lead into the fifth inning after scoring once in the first, third and fourth innings. Sophomore Pat Murphy (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) scored in the first by singling, stealing second, advancing to third on a ground ball and coming home on a wild pitch. In the second, sophomore Noah Burke (Appleton, Maine) led off with a single and later came home on a single by Murphy. In the fourth, sophomore Rich Velotta (Fairfield, Conn.) doubled and scored on a single by first-year Michael Ciummei (Acton, Mass.).

But the Wolves plated two runs in the fifth off of first-year starter Karl Alexander (Cambridge, Mass.) and three more in the sixth off of senior reliever Chuck Murphy-Romboletti (Holyoke, Mass.) to sew up the seven-inning win.

Bates matched West Georgia in hits in Game 1 with 10 apiece. Noah Burke went 3-3 in the game, while Ciummei went 2-3 and Murphy was 2-4.

In Game 2, Bates roared back from an 8-3 Wolves lead, achieved mostly with five runs in the first inning, with seven runs in the sixth. The Bobcats loaded the bases as senior Matt Devin (Bridgewater, Mass.) drew a leadoff walk, followed by singles by Ciummei and sophomore Luke Wamboldt (Sunderland, Mass.). Junior Tom Beaton (West Newbury, Mass.) drew a one-out walk to score Devin, then Murphy plated both Ciummei and Wamboldt with an infield single. Murphy stole second, and sophomore Chris Burke (Andover, Mass.) drove Beaton and Murphy home with a single to right center. Walks drawn by sophomore Jake Simon (Waterford, Conn.) and Devin, on his second trip to the plate in the inning, set up a two-run single through the left side by Ciummei, putting the Bobcats ahead 10-8. The rally ended with bases loaded for Bates.

West Georgia wouldn't go down without a fight, however. The Wolves scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to go ahead 11-10, and Bates was unable to respond in the top of the seventh, giving the Wolves the three-game sweep.

Bates again rapped out 10 hits in Game 2 against West Georgia's 15, with Murphy leading the way by going 2-4 with two RBIs and three runs. Ciummei went 2-2 with two RBIs and a run, while Simon went 2-3 with a run and an RBI. Wamboldt went 2-4.

First-year reliever Will Furbush (South Portland, Maine) accepted the loss for Bates, as he was charged with West Georgia's final run in getting the final two outs of the sixth for Bates. First-year Tyler Kuehl (Plymouth, N.H.) pitched an effective four innings in relief of first-year starter Demetrios Gatzogiannis (Wells, Maine), allowing only one earned run on five hits.

Bates' Georgia trip concludes on Saturday with a doubleheader at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, starting at 1 p.m.
