Shwartz pitches baseball past Farmington, 6-1

BANGOR, Maine -- Senior Ben Shwartz (Mattapoisett, Mass.) pitched into the ninth inning, allowing one run, as the Bates College baseball team defeated UMaine-Farmington 6-1 on Wednesday at Husson University. Bates was the home team in the non-conference contest.

UMF dropped to 0-3 while Bates moved to 4-9.

Shwartz pitched 8 1/3 innings and allowed one run on six hits and one walk while striking out five Beavers. Fellow senior Chuck Murphy-Romboletti (Holyoke, Mass.) came on to get the final two outs, preserving Bates' second win in the past three games.

Bates scored four runs in the first two innings off of UMF starter Brian Morrison (0-2).

Junior Tom Beaton (West Newbury, Mass.) led off the first with a walk, and sophomore Pat Murphy (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) drove him in with an RBI single for one run in the first. Bates scored three in the second as Gordy Webb (Hampden, Maine) walked, advanced on a single by sophomore Noah Burke (Appleton, Maine) and scored on an error. Burke later scored on first-year Mike Ciummei's (Acton, Mass.) ground out RBI. Beaton came on with the bases empty and two out and created a run with a walk, two steals and Murphy's second RBI single of the day.

Bates made it 5-0 in the fifth when sophomore Chris Burke (Andover, Mass.) singled, stole second and came home on sophomore Noah Lynd's (Meriden, N.H.) RBI single.

The Beavers responded with a run in the sixth, as Russ Schmelzer walked, stole second and came home on a single by Garneau, who had two of the Beavers' six hits in the game.

Bates got the run back with one more score in the eighth, when Webb tripled and came home on an RBI single by Ciummei.

Bates collected 11 hits in the game, with Murphy, Ciummei and Webb all coming up with two hits. Beaton added a triple and two stolen bases.

Bates is next scheduled to play at Colby on Friday at 3 p.m.; the Beavers are scheduled to open North Atlantic Conference play Saturday at Castleton State College.
