ORANGEBURG, S.C. -- The Bates College baseball team required only two days of preseason practice to sweep a doubleheader at Division II Claflin University on Wednesday, winning the first game 11-6, then shutting out the Panthers 10-0 in the nightcap.
Bates juniors Jake Simon (Waterford, Conn.) and Noah Lynd (Meriden, N.H.) both homered (2-0) to pace the Bobcats in the opener -- a grand slam by Simon and a solo shot by Lynd. In Game 2, sophomore righthander Karl Alexander threw five hitless innings while Bates posted six runs in the first inning to cruise to the win. The shutout was the first by the Bobcats since a 9-0 defeat of UMaine-Presque Isle on March 22, 2008.
Junior Paul Chiampa (Pembroke, Mass.) earned the win in Game 1, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits and one walk over four innings, while striking out two. First-year Pat Siebenlist (Gaithersburg, Md.) threw two innings in relief, allowing four runs, none of them earned. Junior Pat Murphy (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) threw a perfect seventh inning with one strikeout.
Offensive standouts for Bates in the first game aside from Simon and Lynd included junior All-NESCAC outfielder Chris Burke (Andover, Mass.), who went 3-for-5 with three runs, two RBIs and a stolen base. Junior Rich Velotta (Fairfield, Conn.) went 2-4 with two runs, senior Tom Beaton (West Newbury, Mass.) went 2-5 with two runs and two stolen bases, and junior Gordy Webb (Bangor, Maine) was 2-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Claflin catcher Julio Iglesias had two hits and two RBIs for the Panthers.
Alexander (Cambridge, Mass.) dominated the Panthers (1-5) in Game 2, allowing no hits and two walks over five innings while striking out six. Senior Ryan Horvath (Fort Myers, Fla.) pitched a perfect sixth inning, striking out one, before the game was called.
Bates collected 10 hits in the game, with the lone extra-base hit being a triple by Beaton, who was 2-for-4 with two runs and a stolen base. Simon batted 2-2 with two RBIs and two runs, Velotta was 1-3 with a pair of RBIs. First-years Kevin McGregor (Randolph, N.J.) and Michael Spinosa (Charlottesville, Va.) both had hits, with McGregor adding two RBIs and two runs.
The Bobcats stole seven bases out of 10 attempts on the day.
Bates stays in South Carolina to play a pair of games on Saturday at the Cal Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach. They'll play Richard Stockton at 2 p.m., followed by a matchup against No. 9-ranked Shenandoah University at 5 p.m.
