Baseball splits doubleheader at No. 9 Trinity

Gordie Webb '11 hit a bases-loaded double in the ninth inning to give Bates three insurance runs against Trinity.

HARTFORD, Conn. -- Sophomore LHP James Ramsey (Belmont, Mass.) pitched a two-hit shutout in Game 1 and Bates junior C/DH Gordy Webb (Hampden, Maine) collected four hits and three RBIs in Game 2 as the Trinity College Bantams and the Bates College Bobcats split a doubleheader in NESCAC East Division baseball Saturday afternoon. Trinity (13-4, 6-3 NESCAC East), ranked No. 4 in New England and No. 9 in the nation, won Game 1 by a 6-0 score, before the Bobcats (12-7, 2-4 NESCAC East) won 8-4 in Game 2.

Bates remains on its best start in at least two decades, and has already matched its win total from last season, when the Bobcats finished 12-22.

In Game 1, freshman 3B Stephen Rogers (Watertown, Mass.) went 2-for-3 with a walk in the opening game, coming up with a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Rogers collected his third straight multi-hit performance while freshman OF Alex Almeida (Bridgeport, Conn.) finished with two hits, including a double and two RBI in the game.

Ramsay walked two and struck out two, improving his record to 3-0, while Bates' starter, junior Paul Chiampa (Pembroke, Mass.), also went the distance, allowing four runs in six innings while picking up five strikeouts.

In Game 2, Trinity grabbed a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning after senior OF Jim Wood (Windham, N.H.) hit an RBI single, but Bates came back with a three-run sixth inning, when juniors Jake Simon (Waterford, Conn.) and Noah Lynd (Meriden, N.H.) both scored on an error, followed by an RBI single off the bat of junior Noah Burke (Appleton, Maine), giving the Bobcats a 5-3 lead.

Wood homered to start the seventh inning, but the Trinity offense was stifled by the Bates relievers, who retired nine of the final 11 Bantams to close the game.  Bates freshman Pat Siebenlist (Gaithersburg, Md.) pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless relief to earn his first win of the season, while classmate Mike Antonellis (Sudbury, Mass.) picked up his second save of the season, closing the game with two hitless innings of relief for the Bobcats.

Bates rallied for three runs with two outs to start off the top of the ninth. Junior Chris Burke (Andover, Mass.) hit a double, and Lynd drew a walk before Simon loaded the bases by getting hit by a pitch. Webb, who reached base five times on the afternoon, delivered a bases-clearing double to give Bates an 8-4 lead. Antonellis fired a perfect 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the ninth to preserve the win.

Bates has the next week off for final exams. The Bobcats will play two games at two separate locations on Monday, April 19: against Emerson in Malden, Mass., at 4 p.m., followed by a game against Lasell at Brandeis University at 8 p.m.
