FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The Bates College baseball team split a doubleheader Sunday at the University of Mary Washington, winning the first game 7-5 and dropping the second game 14-2.
Bates (6-3) returns to action on Wednesday with a doubleheader at Husson University, starting at 1 p.m.
In Game 1, the Bobcats came back from a 5-2 deficit with three runs in the fourth, followed by single runs in the fifth and seventh, while junior starting pitcher Ryan Heide (Medfield, Mass.) shut out the Eagles over the final four innings of the game to preserve the win and raise his record to 2-0.
Bates junior Rich Velotta (Fairfield, Conn.) hit a bases-loaded, two-run single in the fourth to score junior Pat Murphy (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) and first-year Kevin McGregor (Randolph, N.J.). Senior Tom Beaton (West Newbury, Mass.), who had walked and now stood on third, was driven home by junior Chris Burke's (Andover, Mass.) single.
The Bobcats manufactured a run in the fifth as junior Noah Burke (Appleton, Maine) led off with a walk, got to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Mike Ciummei (Acton, Mass.), stole third base and came home on McGregor's single to left.
Bates opened the seventh with three consecutive singles, the third being Noah Burke's RBI single that scored junior Jake Simon (Waterford, Conn.).
The Bobcats got out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second. Simon led off with a single, and junior Noah Lynd (Meriden, N.H.) doubled to score Simon. Ciummei's single to center plated Lynd.
Simon, Lynd and McGregor had two hits apiece in Game 1 for Bates.
Eagles pitching quieted Bates' bats in Game 2. The Bobcats managed two runs in the fifth for all of their scoring. First-year Ryan Sonberg (Windsor, Conn.) singled and Murphy reached on an error. Beaton singled to drive home Sonberg and Murphy.
First-year Michael Spinosa (Charlottesville, Va.) made his first start on the mound for Bates and acccepted the loss. Beaton had two of Bates' seven hits.
