BANGOR, Maine -- The Bates College baseball team swept a doubleheader at Husson University in explosive fashion on Wednesday, winning 12-9 in Game 1 before taking Game 2 23-7.

Bates junior Noah Lynd (Meriden, N.H.) hit two home runs, and drove in eight runs -- one shy of the team record set by Chris Hickey in 1985 -- in the second game, while junior Gordy Webb (Hampden, Maine) went 4-for-6 with a homer and four RBIs. Sophomore Mike Ciummei (Acton, Mass.) also homered while going 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs. Junior Pat Murphy (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) scored five runs and was 3-for-5 at the plate.

In Game 1, the Bobcats (8-3) scored five runs in the top of the ninth to come back from an 8-7 deficit and seize a 12-8 lead. Junior Noah Burke (Appleton, Maine) led off with a single and went on to score on a sacrifice fly by Murphy to tie the game at 8-8, but the Bobcats had two outs at that point. Senior Tom Beaton (West Newbury, Mass.) singled and junior Rich Velotta (Fairfield, Conn) walked to load the bases, and junior Chris Burke (Andover, Mass.) followed with a two-run single. Junior Jake Simon (Waterford, Conn.) followed with a two-run double to extend the lead to 12-8.

The Eagles managed to make up only one run in the bottom of the ninth against Bates junior righthander Ryan Heide (Medfield, Mass.), who earned the win with two innings of relief to raise his record to 3-0. Junior Paul Chiampa (Pembroke, Mass.) started and went seven innings, allowing six runs while striking out eight batters.

Beaton, Noah Burke and first-year Kevin McGregor (Randolph, N.J.) all had three hits for Bates in Game 1, while Chris Burke drove in four runs.

Bates collected 21 hits, including four home runs, in the seven-inning nightcap win. The Bobcats scored 10 runs in the second inning for an 11-0 lead, then added six more in the top of the fourth for a 17-1 lead.

Sophomore Karl Alexander (Cambridge, Mass.) earned the win to raise his record to 3-0, despite allowing seven runs over 4 2/3 innings. First-year Pat Siebenlist (Gaithersburg, Md.) and senior Ryan Horvath (Fort Myers, Fla.) combined for 2 1/3 shutout innings of relief.

Bates' 10-run second inning started with a triple by Ciummei, who came home on a sac fly by McGregor. Murphy singled, followed by consecutive two-out walks to Velotta and Simon to load the bases for Lynd, who blasted a grand slam to make it 6-0. Noah Burke followed with a double, and Webb tripled him home to make it 7-0. Up for a second time in the inning, Ciummei hit an RBI single after Husson changed pitchers, and he was followed by back-to-back doubles hit by by McGregor and Murphy. Beaton became the seventh Bobcat to get a hit in the inning with an RBI single for Bates' 10th run of the second frame.
