Baseball team falls 7-2 vs. Division I Black Bears

ORONO, Maine -- The Bates College baseball team put forth a more than respectable effort on Tuesday at Division I Maine, matching the Black Bears in hits with seven in a 7-2 loss at Mahaney Diamond.

Taylor Lewis (Montville, Conn.) had a pair of triples and a three-run double to lead the Black Bears, who improve to 20-16 on the season, while Bates falls to 14-8.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third inning, when the Black Bears took a 1-0 lead. Joe Mercurio (Brewster, N.Y.) drew a walk and Taylor Lewis followed with his 10th triple of the season, scoring Mercurio from first base.

Bates answered back with a run in the top of the fourth inning. Junior Chris Burke (North Andover, Mass.) led off the inning with a single to left field. Junior Noah Lynd (Meriden, N.H.) then doubled off the right field fence, sending Burke to third base with no outs. Burke scored when junior Gordy Webb (Hampden, Maine) singled to right field.

Maine took the lead back in the bottom of the fifth inning with a run. Mercurio drew a walk and Lewis followed with his second triple of the game. Lewis, who holds the record for triples in a season, tied the Maine record for triples in a game with his second of the contest. He now has 11 triples on the season.

Maine extended its lead to 7-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning with five runs. Matt Howard (Weston, Mass.) was hit by a pitch and Myckie Lugbauer (Mahopac, N.Y.) followed with a single to right field, sending Howard to third base. Howard scored on a wild pitch. Tony Patane (New Milford, Conn.) drew a walk before Michael Fransoso (Portsmouth, N.H.) then singled to right field scoring Lugbauer. Mercurio was then hit to load the bases. Lewis then had a bases-clearing double to extend Maine's lead to 7-1.


Bates got a run in the top of the eighth inning to make it a 7-2 final. Junior Pat Murphy (Cape Elizabeth, Maine), who singled to right field, scored when first-year Kevin McGregor (Randolph, N.J.) drew a bases-loaded walk.

Lugbauer got the start on the mound for the Black Bears. He went 3.1 innings and allowed one run on three hits. He struck out six batters in the game. Keith Bilodeau (Bourne, Mass.) replaced Lugbauer and went 2.2 innings. He allowed two hits and struck out a pair. He picks up the win and improves to 2-1 on the season. Matt Jebb (Toronto, Ontario) pitched the sixth inning and allowed a hit while striking out one. Kyle Benoit (Brampton, Ontario) went two-thirds of an inning and allowed one run on one hit. Barry Keiffer (Midland, Texas) went one third of an inning. Ben Orvis (Bristol, Vt.) pitched the ninth and did not allow a hit.

Sophomore Karl Alexander (Cambridge, Mass.) got the start for Bates and went 5.2 innings, allowing five runs on five hits and striking out three batters. He picks up the loss and falls to 4-1 on the season. First-year Michael Spinosa (Charlottesville, Va.) replaced Alexander for 1.1 innings and allowed two runs on a pair of hits. First-year Mike Antonellis (Sudbury, Mass.) replaced Spinosa and pitched one scoreless inning.

Taylor led the Maine offense as he was 3-for-4 with five RBI. Mercurio scored three runs.

Murphy went 2-for-3 for Bates, while Webb went 2-for-4.

Bates returns home on Wednesday to host UMaine-Presque Isle in a doubleheader at Leahey Field, beginning at 1 p.m.
