Baseball team names captains for 2010 season
LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates College head baseball coach Edwin Thompson has announced his team captains for the 2010 season. Senior Tom Beaton (West Newbury, Mass.), junior Pat Murphy (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) and junior Chris Burke (Andover, Mass.) will share leadership responsibilities this coming spring as the Bobcats attempt to reach the NESCAC playoffs and a trip to the NCAA Regionals.
"Three quality young men dominated in the captains voting," Thompson said. "There really was no question who the team wanted to be captains this year."
Beaton, a shortstop, has started 65 games in his first three years at Bates and is a true leadoff hitter. Last he led the team in runs scored (25) and stolen bases (19). "You want to have a player like Tommy in your program," said Thompson. "He's the type of guy that wants to make plays when the game is on the line."
Murphy led all Bates outfielders last year with five assists and also had 12 stolen bases. Last summer he played for the Maroon Bobcats of the KIT League (Kentucky-Tennessee-Illinois League), where he gained great experience and was noted as one of the best defensive outfielders in the league. "Pat is a first class person and does all the little things we ask of our players," said Thompson.
Burke, the starting right fielder last season, had one of the best seasons in many years at Bates, and was selected to the All-NESCAC team. Burke broke the school record with 52 hits while the leading the team with 33 RBIs and a .406 batting average, along with 10 stolen bases. Over the summer he played for the Maryland Orioles in the Maryland Collegiate League, where he hit .345 and was selected to play in the All-Star Game.
"Chris is a true testament to what hard work will bring," said Thompson. "After walking on the team as a freshman, he has worked extremely hard to become one of the better players in the NESCAC and is also a tremendous leader off the field."
The Bobcats will begin practice Feb. 15. They'll open the 2010 campaign in South Carolina with a doubleheader at Division II Claflin University on Feb. 17. The team's full 2010 schedule will be announced in the coming weeks.
