WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Bates College baseball team banged out 16 hits, including three home runs in the fourth inning, and rode a pair of strong pitching performances to a 12-3 win at Catholic University's Talbot Field on Thursday.

It was the first game in nearly a month for the Bobcats (4-1), who will continue their swing through the Washington area tomorrow with a doubleheader at Washington Adventist University in Takoma Park, Md.

Junior second baseman Noah Burke (Appleton, Maine) went 3-for-4 and hit his first homer of the season, a solo shot. Junior first baseman Noah Lynd (Meriden, N.H.) was 2-for-2 with his second homer of the year and three runs scored, while junior outfielder Chris Burke (Andover, Mass.) added his first homer of the season in a 2-for-5 day with three RBIs. Senior Tom Beaton (2-5), junior Rich Velotta (2-4) and sophomore Mike Ciummei (2-4) also pitched in with multiple hits, with Ciummei driving in two runs and scoring two.

Junior righthander Paul Chiampa (Pembroke, Mass.) allowed all three of the Cardinals' runs over his seven innings of work, on just four hits and two walks while striking out four. Junior righthander Ryan Heide (Medfield, Mass.) pitched a shutout final two innings, allowing one hit and no walks and striking out three.

Bates scored a run in the first as junior DH Gordy Webb (Bangor, Maine) drove Velotta home from second on a single. The Bobcats made it 3-0 in the second as Lynd led off with a double, stole third and came home on a single by junior outfielder Pat Murphy (Cape Elizabeth, Maine). Murphy stole second and came home on an RBI single by Velotta.

Bates struck for five runs in the fourth. Lynd and Noah Burke led off with back-to-back home runs off of Catholic starter Trevor Falk (0-1). Falk was lifted in favor of Nick Perrotta after a Ciummei single and a Beaton double. Perrotta got Velotta to pop up to first, but Chris Burke came on to blast a three-run home run to open up an 8-0 Bates lead.

Catholic got on the board in the sixth as Tommy Little walked, stole second and came home on a double by Dmitri Deoudes.

The Bobcats tacked on three more runs in the top of the seventh, as Ciummei doubled to score Lynd and Noah Burke, who had doubled. Ciummei later came home on an RBI groundout by Beaton.

The Cardinals finally got to Chiampa in the bottom of the seventh, as Mark Kalokitis reached on an error, and was later followed by back-to-back doubles by Matt Grieb and Dave Grear.

Junior catcher Jake Simon (Waterford, Conn.) had an RBI double in the eighth to expand Bates' lead to 12-3.
