LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates baseball broke the team's all-time record for wins in a season on Saturday as the Bobcats swept a doubleheader at Colby. With a 7-2 win in Game 1, Bates matched the 1984 team (which finished 18-6) for the most wins in the program's 138-year history. Bates' 7-3 win in Game 2 -- its fifth in a row and its eighth in the past nine games -- put the Bobcats alone on that list with win No. 19.

More importantly, Bates (19-8) moved to 5-4 in the NESCAC East Division, in a virtual tie for second place with Trinity (6-5). Only the top two teams in the division will play for the NESCAC Championship. Bates next plays at Plymouth State on Monday at 3:30 p.m. The Bobcats have a three-game series against Bowdoin next weekend on their remaining league schedule; Trinity has only a makeup game with first-place Tufts.

Colby falls to 11-13 overall and 2-10 in the league.

In Game 1, Bates scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning to turn a 3-2 deficit into a victory. The Bobcats sent 10 batters to the plate, with the big blow a two-run single from junior Gordy Webb (Hampden, Maine). Senior Josh Linscott (Portland, Maine), senior Tom Beaton (West Newbury, Mass.) and junior Chris Burke (Andover, Mass.) had RBI singles in the inning.

The Mules had gone up 3-0 with two runs in the first on RBI singles from John LaMantia (Gates Mills, Ohio) and Chris Murdock (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.). Colby’s Nikolas Atsalis (West Hyannis Port, Mass.) scored on a Bates error for a lone run in the second inning.

Linscott, who led the way with three hits, and junior Rich Velotta (Fairfield, Conn.) brought the Bobcats back to within one run at 3-2 with RBI singles in the fourth inning.

Sophomore Karl Alexander (Cambridge, Mass.) entered the game in the first inning and went the rest of the way at pitcher for Bates, moving to 5-1 on the season. Beaton, Webb, and junior Jake Simon (Waterford, Conn.) all had two hits for the winners. Meanwhile, Murdock had two hits for the Mules.

In the second game, Webb ripped a grand slam homer in the fifth inning to put Bates up 6-0 at the time. Junior Pat Murphy (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) had a triple and three singles for the Bobcats, while Simon had three hits and a walk.

Brendan Gallagher (Dublin, N.H.) homered and walked twice for Colby. Jake Kramer (Medfield, Mass.) added two hits.

Junior Ryan Heide (Medfield, Mass.) worked seven innings to get the victory for Bates, moving to 6-1 on the season. Sophomore Demetrios Gatzogiannis (Wells, Maine) and first-year Mike Antonellis (Sudbury, Mass.) both worked one scoreless inning in relief.
