Lynd homers in baseball's comeback 3-2 win at Thomas

Tom Beaton '10 went 2-for-4 and scored the game-winning run in the eighth.

WATERVILLE, Maine -- The Bates College baseball team came back from a 2-0 deficit with three runs after the seventh inning, defeating the Terriers 3-2 in a non-conference game on Tuesday.

After going scoreless for the first six innings against Thomas starter Eric Sucy, Bates (11-5) got on the scoreboard in the seventh on junior Noah Lynd's (Meriden, N.H.) seventh homer of the year, a one-out blast. With the season less than half over, Lynd already has the most home runs by a Bates player since Rob Maguire hit seven in the 2004 season.

First-year Jeffrey Clausen (Southold, N.Y.)singled to lead off the eighth for Bates. He got to second on Pat Murphy's (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) sacrifice bunt, and came home to tie the game at 2-2 on Tom Beaton's (West Newbury, Mass.) single to right. Beaton moved to third on an error, then came home with the winning run on Noah Burke's (Appleton, Maine) sacrifice fly to right.

Bates used a committee of pitchers on the day, six in all, started off by junior Paul Chiampa's (Pembroke, Mass.) two shutout innings with four strikeouts. Sophomore Demetrios Gatzogiannis (Wells, Maine) earned his first win of the season, pitching a scoreless seventh inning with two strikeouts, to move his record to 1-1. Rookie Mike Antonellis (Sudbury, Mass.) earned his first save in pitching a perfect final 1 1/3 innings, with two strikeouts. First-year Kevin McGregor (Randolph, N.J.) held the Bates lead in the eighth, getting the first two outs of the inning.

Bates next plays a three-game series at NESCAC East Division rival and conference power Trinity College, starting with a nine-inning game on Friday at 3 p.m.
