RICHARDSON, Texas -- The Bates College baseball team rallied for two runs in the top of the ninth to send the game into extra innings, but the University of Texas at Dallas plated a run in the bottom of the 10th for a 6-5 victory on Wednesday.

Bates (1-2), which split a doubleheader at Austin College yesterday, has three games left in its weeklong Texas trip. The Bobcats play at Dallas Christian College tomorrow at 3 p.m. Central, followed by a doubleheader at the University of Dallas on Saturday, beginning at noon.

The host Comets rose to 5-2 on the season.

The Bobcats trailed 5-3 after eight innings before rallying for two in the ninth. Senior Rich Velotta (Fairfield, Conn.) drew a one-out walk, then moved to second on junior Mike Ciummei's (Acton, Mass.) infield single. Senior Pat Murphy (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) doubled down the right-field line to drive Velotta home and move Ciummei to third. Senior Chris Burke (Andover, Mass.) then singled up the middle to bring Ciummei home with the tying run. The rally ended with a double play.

Sophomore righthander Mike Antonellis (Sudbury, Mass.), who had entered the game in the eighth, left the host Comets scoreless in the bottom of the ninth. Bates put two runners on with one out in the top of the 10th, but another double play ended the threat.

UT-Dallas led off the bottom of the 10th with a walk and a sacrifice bunt, setting up Kyle Guest's game-ending RBI single up the middle off of Antonellis.

Bates scored a run in the third, when Velotta led off with a single and eventually came home by benefit of two Comet errors.

The Bobcats added two runs in the seventh to close a three-run gap to 4-3. Sophomore Ryan Sonberg (Windsor, Conn.) reached on an error to lead off, and Velotta followed with a single. Ciummei moved both runners over with a sac bunt, and Sonberg scored on Murphy's RBI groundout. Chris Burke then drove Velotta home with an infield single.

Chris Burke led off for Bates and went 3-for-5 with two RBIs, but the next five batters in the Bates order were held to one hit out of 23 at-bats combined. Velotta was 2-for-3 with three runs scored, and Ciummei went 2-for-3 as well. Murphy had a pair of RBIs.

Sophomore Michael Spinosa (Charlottesville, Va.) started on the mound for Bates and allowed three runs over four innings, striking out four. Sophomore Kevin McGregor (Randolph, N.J.) came on for three innings of relief, allowing just one run and striking out two.
