Baseball romps at Salem State, 15-2

SALEM, Mass. -- Junior Karl Alexander (Cambridge, Mass.) gave up just three hits in six shutout innings, while the Bates baseball team banged out 18 hits en route to a 15-2 victory over Salem State on Saturday afternoon at the Salem State Baseball Field. Eight out of the starting nine in the Bates lineup recorded at least one hit as the Bobcats cruised to an easy victory.

The host Vikings fell to 4-8 on the season while Bates improved to 5-7.

Bates broke the game open in the third inning by scoring six runs to give take an 8-0 lead. Senior Pat Murphy (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) began the inning by reaching on an error by Viking third-baseman Kevin Salines (Melrose, Mass.) and later scored on a sacrifice fly by senior Jake Simon (Waterford, Conn.). Senior Gordy Webb (Hampden, Maine) added an RBI double, and junior Mike Ciummei (Acton, Mass.) followed with an RBI single for Bates to start a rally that saw 10 men come to the plate.

Salem State's Mario Padovoni (Lynfield, Mass.) was hit with the loss. He pitched 3 1/3 innings and gave up 11 runs, nine earned, on 10 hits. He walked two and struck out two. Ryan Sharp (Townsend, Mass.) pitched 1.2 innings out of the bullpen and gave up three earned runs on four hits and struck out two Bobcats.

Bates senior Noah Lynd (Meriden, N.H.) reached base four times, going 3-for-3 with two doubles and driving in three runs. Webb went 3-for-5 and had two RBIs, while Ciummei went 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs.

Sophomore Ryan Sonberg (Windsor, Conn.) and seniors Chris Burke (North Andover, Mass.) and Noah Burke (Appleton, Maine) each collected two hits in the game.

Ethan Trowt (Beverly, Mass.), Evan Valcourt (Salisbury, Mass.) and Geury Alonzo (Boston, Mass.) were the only three Viking starters to record hits, all of which were singles.

The Vikings first run came in the seventh inning from substitute Kyle McElvoy's (Newburyport, Mass.) RBI triple in the right-center gap which plated Ryan Kane (Nahant, Mass.) who reached on catcher's interference.

Bates travels to Bangor to play at Husson on Monday at 3 p.m.
