IRVING, Texas -- Bates senior Noah Lynd (Meriden, N.H.) hit a grand slam in Game 2, but it wasn't enough for the Bobcats to avoid being swept in a doubleheader at the University of Dallas on Saturday, as the host Crusaders won 7-1 in Game 1 and came from behind to win 7-6 in Game 2 at Crusader Field.

Dallas (7-2) trailed Bates (2-4) 6-5 after six innings of the second game of the day, but the Crusaders regained the lead with two runs in the seventh. Devin Arnold walked to lead off and later scored the tying run on a wild pitch, before Brian Shelburne scored on a squeeze bunt by Michael Morrison.

Bates got four runs in the fifth on a two-out, bases-empty rally. Senior Chris Burke (Andover, Mass.) hit a two-out double, senior Pat Murphy (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) walked, and senior Gordy Webb (Bangor, Maine) loaded the bases when Dallas failed to get an out on a fielder's choice. Lynd then came up to swat a grand slam to chase Dallas starter Michael Byers and give Bates a 5-4 lead.

Dallas tied the game back up with a run in the fifth, but the Bobcats regained the lead in the sixth, when first-year Griff Tewksbury (Concord, N.H.) walked to lead off and scored on senior Noah Burke's (Appleton, Maine) RBI fielder's choice.

Chris Burke was 2-for-5 in the game with a run and an RBI. Senior Rich Velotta (Fairfield, Conn.) was 1-for-4 with a run and a stolen base. Sophomore Michael Spinosa (Charlottesville, Va.) and Mike Antonellis (Sudbury, Mass.) both pitched scoreless innings in relief of first-year starting pitcher Tom Baroni (Mount Kisco, N.Y.), who allowed four runs, two earned, in three innings. First-year lefthander Brad Reynolds (Louisvile, Colo.) accepted the loss, allowing three runs over three innings in relief.

Adam Farris hit a grand slam of his own for the Crusaders in the third inning of Game 1, putting Dallas on top for good at 5-1. Bates was held to five hits over seven innings in Game 1, as Dallas starter Philip Carkhuff raised his record to 2-1, scattering three hits and no walks over six innings.

Junior righthander Karl Alexander (Cambridge, Mass.) started Game 1 for Bates and went two innings, giving way to five Bates relievers. Junior Demetrios Gatzogiannis (Wells, Maine) had the most success of Bates' six pitchers, allowing one unearned run over two innings while striking out two. Dallas was limited to six hits but took advantage of seven walks issued by Bates.

Senior Jake Simon (Wateford, Conn.), Webb, Lynd, Sonberg and junior Mike Ciummei (Acton, Mass.) all had hits for Bates in Game 1. Webb scored Bates' lone run in the second, leading off the inning with a walk, advancing two bases on a pair of groundouts and coming home on a wild pitch.

Bates next plays in Georgia on March 10 at Oglethorpe University, prior to a pair of doubleheaders at Berry College March 11 and 12.
