WATERVILLE, Maine -- Bates freshman Griff Tewksbury went 3-for-5 with a three-run home run and a double as Bates College opened up a big lead, fell behind, and then scored three runs in the final two innings for a 12-10 victory over Colby College in New England Small College Athletic Conference East Division play Friday at Coombs Field.

The Bobcats move to 16-14 overall and 3-7 in the division, while Colby falls to 11-18 and 0-9. Tewksbury's (Concord, N.H.) two-out, three-run homer in the third inning gave the Bobcats a 3-0 lead. The Mules did battle back with two runs in the bottom of the third, with one run coming in on a bases loaded walk to John Schroeder.

Bates seemed to take control with six runs in the top of the fifth for a 9-2 lead. Senior Chris Burke (Andover, Mass.) had a two-run single and senior Gordy Webb (Hampden, Maine) and sophomore Kevin McGregor (Randolph, N.J.) both had RBI singles.

The Mules scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a Bates error and when John Lerner reached on a fielder's choice.

Colby went ahead 10-9 with six runs in the seventh inning. Robb Arndt had a two-run single, Brandon Nieuw and Lerner each had RBI walks, and Nikolas Atsalis drove in another run with a sacrifice fly.

Bates tied the game with a single run in the eighth when sophomore Ryan Sonberg (Windsor, Conn.) came around to score from second base on a Colby error. The Bobcats then received a two-run double from senior Rich Velotta (Fairfield, Conn.) in the ninth inning for what ended up as the game-winning runs.

Sonberg was on base four times with two hits, a hit by pitch, and a walk. Webb added three hits and senior Jake Simon (Waterford, Conn.) drew three walks for the Bobcats.

Sophomore righthander Michael Spinosa (Charlottesville, Va.) pitched the final 2 1/3 innings and was charged with no runs to earn his second win in the past week, raising his record to 3-2.

Richard Newton had three hits to lead the Mules. Mastrocola was on base four times and had two hits, while Arndt scored a pair of runs and was on base four times.
