LEWISTON, Maine -- Edward Donovan threw six shutout innings and Joe Papa went 4-for-5 and scored three runs as Trinity College defeated the Bates College baseball team 7-3 to open the teams' three-game NESCAC East Division series on Friday at Leahey Field.

Bates (10-13, 1-6 NESCAC East) is slated to play Trinity (14-13, 4-3 NESCAC East) in a doubleheader tomorrow at Leahey Field starting at 10 a.m., weather permitting. The games can be followed online via Live Audio Webcast.

Bates senior starter Paul Chiampa (Pembroke, Mass.) submitted a solid start for the Bobcats, going eight innings and allowing five runs -- only two of which were earned -- on five hits and three walks while striking out a season-high nine batters.

Trinity got two runs on the board in the fourth inning, as Papa singled and Stephen Rogers walked to set the table for Mark Young, who doubled home both players.

The Bantams added another run in the sixth, as Papa led off with a double and later came home on a Bobcat error.

Trinity reliever Ben Goldberg came on for the seventh inning, inheriting a 3-0 lead, and held the Bobcats scoreless for two innings.

Bates reached Goldberg for three runs in the ninth inning before he induced senior Noah Lynd (Meriden, N.H.) into a game-ending groundout to nail down his first save of the season. Goldberg started off the inning by hitting both junior Mike Ciummei (Acton, Mass.) and senior Noah Burke (Appleton, Maine) on breaking balls. Sophomore Ryan Sonberg's (Windsor, Conn.) single to right field scored Ciummei, and Pat Murphy drove home both Burke and Sonberg with a two-run single to close the gap to 7-3. Murphy would become Bates' 10th man left on base, however.

Sonberg went 3-for-5 for Bates, which had eight hits to nine for Trinity. Senior Gordy Webb (Hampden, Maine) went 1-for-2 and drew two walks, while Noah Burke had a hit, a run and a stolen base.
