MEDFORD, Mass. -- Tufts won a pair of one-run games over the Bates baseball team on Sunday in NESCAC East Division play. The Jumbos won the first game 7-6 and took the nightcap 3-2.

The Jumbos are now 9-4-1 overall (3-0 NESCAC East) with six wins in a row. Bates fell to 6-10 overall and 0-3 in the division.

In the seven-inning first game, the Jumbos scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to go ahead 7-6. David Orlowitz was hit by a pitch with one out. He went to third on a double by Sam Sager and then scored on a ground out by Chase Rose. Sager then scored the eventual game-winning run on a passed ball.

Tufts senior Ed Bernstein earned the win in relief with 2 2/3 no-hit innings. Bates had the potential tying run on second base with two outs in the top of the seventh, but Bernstein got a strikeout to end the game. Sophomore Michael Spinosa (Charlottesville, Va.) took the tough-luck loss in relief for Bates, allowing one hit and two runs (one earned) in 2 1/3 innings.

The visiting Bobcats had led 2-0 early on a two-run home run by senior catcher Gordy Webb (Hampden, Maine) in the second. A four-run third inning highlighted by a three-run double from Matt Collins put the Jumbos up 4-2. A two-out solo home run by Orlowitz in the fourth gave Tufts a 5-2 advantage.

The Bobcats fought back with four in the fifth inning to lead 6-5. Senior CF Pat Murphy (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) hit a two-run single and senior LF Chris Burke (Andover, Mass.) followed with a two-run double.

In game two, the score was tied at 2-2 heading into the bottom of the ninth. Frank Petroskey led off with a single. He was sacrificed to second by David LeResche and then scored the winning run on a two-out single through the hole on the left side by Rose.

Bates had gotten on top early in game two, scoring twice in the first including a double by senior 1B Noah Lynd (Meriden, N.H.). They had the bases loaded with one out in the first after the two runs were across, but Tufts starter Derek Miller retired the next two batters to squelch the threat.

The game evolved as pitching duel between Miller and Bates senior Paul Chiampa (Pembroke, Mass.). Collins hit a solo home run in the second to pull the Jumbos within 2-1, and then back-to-back doubles by Orlowitz and Sager tied the score at 2-2 in the seventh. Miller allowed five hits and two runs in seven innings, while Chiampa surrendered six hits and two runs with no walks in seven innings.

Sophomore SS Ryan Sonberg (Windsor, Conn.) had two hits at the top of the Bobcat batting order. Losing pitcher Tom Baroni (Mount Kisco, N.Y.) gave up two hits and one run in 1 2/3 innings of relief.

Bates continues NESCAC East play with its home opener on Friday against Bowdoin, starting at 3 p.m. The game can be followed online via Live Stats and Video Webcast.
