WATERVILLE, Maine -- The Bates College baseball team scored six runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 7-2 win in the opener and received a two-run home run from sophomore Ryan Curit (South Portland, Maine) in a 7-4 nightcap victory to take a doubleheader sweep from Colby College in NESCAC East play Saturday at Coombs Field.
Bates moves to 20-15 overall and 4-7 in the NESCAC East, while the Mules fall to 16-16 overall and 3-8 in the league. The two teams will meet Sunday at 5pm at Portland's Hadlock Field in a single nine-inning game (Audio).
The first game was mostly about the pitchers in the first six innings. Sophomore lefthander Tom Baroni (Mount Kisco, N.Y.) of Bates pitched a complete game, allowing just one earned run while striking out five and walking none, his third straight stellar start in a divisional game. Colby's Brady Hesslein threw into the seventh inning and allowed just one earned run, had four strikeouts, and one walk.
Bates scored first when sophomore Kevin Davis (Andover, Mass.) had a one-out double and scored on a double by sophomore Griff Tewksbury (Concord, N.H.) in the first inning.
The Mules tied the game at 1-1 in the fifth inning on a leadoff home run by Mike Mastrocola, his second of the season and his 31st RBI.
Colby had three errors in the seventh inning and Bates used three hits, an intentional walk, and a sacrifice fly to score six runs and send 10 batters to the plate. Senior Mike Ciummei (Acton, Mass.) had an RBI double in the inning, while Davis had an RBI single and Tewksbury had a sacrifice fly.
With the score 5-4 in the second game, Curit hit his two-run homer, his first this season, to bring in sophomore Jeffrey Gunn (Atlanta, Ga.) and give Bates some breathing room with a 7-4 margin.
Junior Kevin McGregor (Randolph, N.J.) scored the first Bates run in the second inning on an RBI groundout by junior Ryan Sonberg (Windsor, Conn.). The Mules, though, scored three times in the bottom of the second to take the lead. Devlin McConnell led off with a single, Brendan Gallagher walked, and both came in on a two-run double by Taro Gold. Gold later scored on a double play ball.
Bates scored on a run in the third inning when Davis reached on an error and came home on Ciummei's double. The Bobcats made it 3-3 after four innings when first-year Mekae Hyde (Lewiston, Maine) had a one-out double and scored on Sonberg's single.
The Bobcats went up for good at 5-3 with two runs in the sixth inning. Sophomore Steve Burke (Bedford, N.H.) led off with a single and scored on McGregor's double. Hyde, who was 3-for-4 in Game 2, then plated McGregor with a single.
The Mules got to within 5-4 with a lone run in the bottom of the sixth. McConnell had a one-out walk, moved to second on a ground out, and scored on another double by Gold.
Junior righthander Michael Spinosa (Charlottesville, Va.) worked the first five innings for the Bates win, raising his record to 4-2. Sophomore Brad Reynolds (Louisville, Colo.) went the final four innings to earn the save, his third of the season.
