Baroni, Hyde drive baseball to 7-2 win at Colby

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Sophomore Mekae Hyde homered for the second straight game, and junior Tom Baroni pitched eight strong innings to lead the Bates baseball team to a 7-2 win at Colby on Friday.

The win snapped a six-game winless skid in NESCAC East play for the Bobcats (13-14, 3-7), who will host the Mules (9-16, 2-8) in a doubleheader tomorrow at 12pm. Bates will celebrate Senior Day for senior captains Mike Antonellis (Sudbury, Mass.), Kevin McGregor (Randolph, N.J.), Ryan Sonberg (Windsor, Conn.) and Michael Spinosa (Charlottesville, Va.).

Baroni (Mount Kisco, N.Y.) went eight complete innings, his fifth straight start of at least 7 innings. Baroni allowed only two runs in the sixth inning, both unearned. He gave up five hits, struck out three and walked two.

Hyde had a solo shot to begin the fifth inning and finished with two runs scored. Junior Kevin Davis (North Andover, Mass.) had two hits and one RBI, first-year Rockwell Jackson (Fort Worth, Texas) added two hits and one run, first-year Sam Berry (South Hamilton, Mass.) finished with one hit and two RBI, and Sonberg scored twice and had one hit.

Tim Corey (Framingham, Mass.) had a pair of hits for Colby. Luke Duncklee (Augusta, Maine) added one hit and one run, while Peter McAuliffe (Cambridge, Mass.) went 1-for-2.

Bates took control in the first inning with three runs, started off by a single from Jackson. Junior captain Griff Tewksbury (Concord, N.H.) followed with a walk and Sonberg reached when the Mules had an error on his sacrifice bunt to score Jackson. Davis followed with a single to bring in Tewksbury, Hyde reached on a fielder's choice, and Sonberg scored on a double steal with Hyde.

The Bobcats went up 6-0 with three more runs in the third inning. Sonberg led off with a single, moved to second on an groundout by Davis, and a single by Hyde (took second on a throw) loaded the bases. Berry had a two-run single to bring in Sonberg and Hyde and went all the way to third on an outfielder error by Colby. Berry scored the third run on a wild pitch.

Colby scored its two runs in the sixth when Duncklee led off with a single, Nathan Ellis (Milton, Mass.) reached by error, and a single by Corey loaded the bases. Kevin Galvin reached on another Bates error and both runs came in.
