LEICESTER, Mass. -- The Bates baseball team rebounded from a 3-2 loss in the first game with an 8-4 victory in Game 2 of a non-conference doubleheader at Becker College on Saturday.
Bates (9-9) remained at the .500 mark, while Becker moved to 3-20.
Game 1 Recap: Becker 3, Bates 2
Becker's Todd Tompkins crossed home plate with the game-ending run in the bottom of the seventh in the Hawks' 3-2 Game 1 win.
Sophomore Mekae Hyde (Lewiston, Maine) hit a two-run double in the third inning, scoring senior captains Ryan Sonberg (Windsor, Conn.) and Kevin McGregor (Randolph, N.J.), as Bates assumed a 2-0 lead. The Hawks scored individual runs in the fourth and fifth to tie the game through five frames.
Sophomore Sam Maliska (Palo Alto, Calif.) pitched a shutout sixth inning for Bates, and senior captain Mike Antonellis (Sudbury, Mass.) was summoned to pitch the seventh, after Becker starter Nick Lemay got out of a bases-loaded jam unscathed in the top of the seventh. Tompkins hit a one-out double to left center, his second double of the game, and Mike Marcello's two-out single to center field proved to be the game-winning hit.
Sonberg was 4-for-4 at the plate in the game, while junior captain Griff Tewksbury (Concord, N.H.) was 2-for-3. Junior lefthander Brad Reynolds (Lafayette, Colo.) started and pitched five solid innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits and two walks.
Game 2 Recap
Bates scored three runs in the third inning off of Becker starter Tony Cantalupo, then made it 7-0 in the top of the fifth with four more runs.
First-year Berto Diaz (Carson, Calif.) hit a leadoff single in the third, and Tewksbury was hit by a pitch. Junior Kevin Davis (North Andover, Mass.) then delivered a two-out single up the middle to score Diaz, bringing up first-year Sam Berry (South Hamilton, Mass.), whose double to left-center plated Tewksbury and Davis.
Sonberg led off the fifth with a double, then yielded to sophomore pinch runner Alex Parker (Lewiston, Maine). Tewksbury was again hit by a pitch before junior Steve Burke's (Bedford, N.H.) single to right field scored Parker. Davis came up and again delivered, with a two-run double to right center. After Berry's infield single, first-year Conor Reenstierna (Lincoln, Mass.) singled to score Davis for the fourth run of the frame.
Bates senior captain Mike Spinosa (Charlottesville, Va.) made the start and shut the Hawks out over the first four innings, but Becker saw four runs cross the plate in the bottom of the fifth, matching Bates' run count in the top of the inning.
Sophomore Dillon Dresser (Falmouth, Maine) came on to start the sixth inning, with Bates leading 7-4, and wound up earning his first save with two shutout innings, including two strikeouts. Spinosa rose to 1-2 with the win.
Davis was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three driven in in the game, while Berry was 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs. Sonberg and Tewksbury also had doubles against Becker pitching.
