BANGOR, Maine -- Bates pitchers Brad Reynolds and Mike Antonellis combined on a three-hitter to win Game 1, and Ryan Sonberg went 6-for-9 on the day with a home run and three doubles, as the Bobcats split a doubleheader at Husson University on Sunday.
Bates (5-4) won Game 1 by a 10-2 score, but the Eagles (4-7) rebounded for a 5-3 victory in Game 2.
Game 1 Recap (Bates 10, Husson 2)
The Bobcats jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st when junior Griff Tewksbury (Concord, N.H.) doubled home Sonberg (Windsor, Conn.).
In the top of the third, the Bobcats scored five more runs to go up 6-0. Sophomore Mekae Hyde (Lewiston, Maine), Sonberg and Tewksbury loaded the bases to start the inning with no outs for junior Kevin Davis (Andover, Mass.), who singled to center field to score Hyde and Sonberg. Junior Steve Burke (Bedford, N.H.) followed with another RBI single to score Tewksbury, and senior Kevin McGregor (Randolph, N.J.) singled again to score Burke.
Bates scored single runs in each of the next three innings, making it 9-0.
Pat McEwen got tagged with the loss for the Eagles, going four innings, allowing eight hits, and six earned runs.
Reynolds (Lafayette, Colo.), who was primarily a relief pitcher prior to this season, earned his first collegiate victory in style, going 6.0 innings and allowing one run on only one hit with three walks, while striking out five Eagles. Antonellis (Sudbury, Mass.) came on to pitch the final three innings, allowing one run on two hits and two walks with three strikeouts.
Game 2 Recap (Husson 5, Bates 3)
Righthanded pitcher Brandon Reilly held the Bobcats scoreless for the first five innings, allowing the Eagles some time to build a lead.
The Eagles scored three in the bottom of the third. Yates singled to center field bringing in Cody McInnis. Then Shawn Smith doubled to left center bringing in both Yates and Pat Thibodeau.
Sonberg homered to left for the Bobcats in the top of the 6th to make it 3-1, his and the Bobcats' second round-tripper this season. Josh Gaudette flew out to center field on a sacrifice fly, bringing in Smith to make it 4-1. In the bottom of the 7th Smith flew out for his own sacrifice fly, bringing in McInnis for the 5th Eagle run of the day.
Bates scored single runs in both the top of the 8th and 9th in a comeback bid. Tewksbury started a two-out rally in the eighth by drawing a walk, then moving to second on first-year Sam Berry's (South Hamilton, Mass.) single to left field, and scoring on Davis's RBI single. In the ninth, sophomore Rockwell Jackson (Fort Worth, Texas) reached on a fielder's choice and then scored on Sonberg's double down the left-field line. but that would not be enough to overcome the lead established by the Eagles. Smith got the third out, however, earning the save and sealing the win for Husson.
Smith went 3-3 in the game, driving in three runs and scoring one.
Bates opens NESCAC East Division play next weekend at Tufts, beginning with a nine-inning game on Friday at 3pm.
