BOSTON -- Bates College senior tight end Sean Wirth was named Thursday to the New England Football Writers' Division II/III All-New England Team.
Wirth (Barrington, R.I.) is the first Bobcat to receive the prestigious honor since former linebacker Frost Hubbard '00 was named to the team in 1999. He is the only tight end on the 31-member team, which represents 20 different teams. Bentley College leads the team with four selections.
The team will be honored at the New England football Writers Banquet on Thursday, December 10 at Casa di Fior in Wilmington, Mass. People interested in attending should contact Dick Lipe at Bentley College at 781-891-2334.
It is the second postseason honor in two days for Wirth, who led all tight ends in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) in 2009 in receptions (40) and receiving yards (393), both career highs. Wirth tied for eighth in the league in catches per game (5.0).
An excellent blocker as well as receiver, Wirth's best games in 2009 included a 10-catch, 102-yard outing at Williams and eight receptions, 62 yards and a touchdown against Trinity. Over his three years as a Bobcat, Wirth amassed 82 receptions for 770 yards and six touchdowns.
The 6-foot-7 Wirth is also one of the top veterans on the Bates men's basketball team.
