CRAIGVILLE, Mass. -- Bates senior Sean Wirth was the lone tight end named to the 2009 ECAC Division III Northeast Football All-Star Team, announced on Tuesday by the Eastern College Athletic Conference. It is the third postseason football honor this year for Wirth, who also took home First Team All-NESCAC and New England Football Writers Division II/III All-New England Team laurels last month.
The 6-foot-7, 240-pound Wirth (Barrington, R.I.) is the first Bobcat to earn ECAC All-Star honors since defensive lineman Terence Ryan '07 in 2006. Wirth was also the first Bobcat to receive the NEFW All-New England award since linebacker Frost Hubbard '00 was named to that team in 1999.
Wirth led all tight ends in the NESCAC in 2009 in receptions (40) and receiving yards (393), both career highs. Wirth tied for eighth in the league in catches per game (5.0).
An excellent blocker as well as receiver, Wirth's best games in 2009 included a 10-catch, 102-yard outing at Williams and eight receptions, 62 yards and a touchdown against Trinity. Over his three years as a Bobcat, Wirth amassed 82 receptions for 770 yards and six touchdowns.
Wirth is also one of the top veterans on the Bates men's basketball team.
