Vandersea '63 gets Greater Boston Gridiron Club award

WALTHAM, Mass. -- Bates College alumnus Howard Vandersea ’63 will be bestowed the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Greater Boston Gridiron Club on Thursday, January 10 at a reception in Waltham, Mass.

The honor represents at least the third in the past year for Vandersea, who was Bates football’s first All-America honoree, as well as a four-year letterwinner on the Bates baseball team. In the spring of 2012, he was also inducted into the Maine Sports Hall of Fame and was the alumni inductee into the Bates Scholar-Athlete Society's Class of 2012.

Following his graduation from Bates, Vandersea began a distinguished career as a coach, including lengthy stints as head coach at Springfield College, where he was Bates head coach Mark Harriman’s head coach, and finally for 16 seasons at Bowdoin. Vandersea has been a strong influence in the careers of a host of other coaches, including NFL coach Steve Spagnuolo and the head coaches at Bates, Harvard, Maine Maritime and Springfield.

Vandersea remains Northeast Regional Coordinator of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame and is the president of the organization’s Maine chapter, a post he has held for 25 years.
