HADLEY, Mass. -- Bates senior punter David Kurey was named the NESCAC Football Special Teams Player of the Week, announced Sunday by the New England Small College Athletic Conference.
Kurey (West Chester, Pa.) punted nine times for a 42.3-yard average, sticking three kicks at the Amherst 4-, 7- and 12-yard lines in Saturday's season opener. Two of the punts that landed inside the Amherst 20 came in the third quarter, as Bates and Amherst battled for field position in a tight game.
A 2013 NESCAC All-Academic selection, Kurey is Bates' nominee this year for the National Football Foundation's National Scholar-Athlete Scholarship.
Bates nearly pulled off an upset victory at Amherst's Pratt Field, but the Jeffs prevailed 14-6. Bates plays at Tufts this Saturday, Sept. 27 at 1pm.
