HADLEY, Mass. -- Bates senior free safety Ryan Newson has earned NESCAC Football Co-Defensive Player of the Week honors, as announced Sunday by the New England Small College Athletic Conference.
On Tuesday, Newson added ECAC Division III Northeast Co-Defensive Player of the Week honors, along with Castleton linebacker Darren Callan.
Newson (Stanhope, N.J.) had his third game with double-digit tackles in as many weeks this season, to go with his third and fourth interceptions this season, in Bates' 19-12 win over Williams on Saturday at Garcelon Field. He shares this week's NESCAC honor with Middlebury senior Matthew Benedict.
Newson's second interception came immediately after a Bobcat turnover, and set up a touchdown drive that gave Bates the lead for good late in the second quarter. Newson also had a half-sack among his 11 tackles, eight of which were solo takedowns.
In his first season as an every-week starting free safety, Newson is tied for third in the NESCAC in tackles per game, at 11.0, and he is tied with Wesleyan's Jake Bussani for the conference interceptions lead, with four.
Newson is Bates' first NESCAC Defensive Player of the Week since the 2012 season, when both Gilbert Brown '15 and Joe Dell'Erario '13 received the honor.
Bates defeated Williams for the fourth straight year, after the Ephs had won 22 of the previous 23 encounters between the teams. The Bobcats (1-2) host Wesleyan (3-0) this Saturday at 1pm.
