MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- A late goal by Lyndsay Beaton wasn't enough for the Bates College field hockey team at Wesleyan University on Saturday. Behind a pair of goals by sophomore Morgan McCauley and a late tally by sophomore Liz Chabot, Wesleyan (5-5, 2-5 NESCAC) defeated Bates 3-1.

Bates' (1-8, 0-7 NESCAC) next scheduled game is at New England College on Tuesday. The Bobcats' game at the University of Southern Maine, which had been rescheduled for a second time to tomorrow, is postponed again with a makeup date yet to be announced.

Wesleyan jumped on the board quickly as McCauley scored off a pass from freshman Ashley McLaren 3:18 into the contest. Wesleyan held a 7-3 advantage in shots in the first half, but five saves by Bates junior goalkeeper Katie McEnroe (Hockessin, Del.) kept Wesleyan from expanding its margin, and the Cardinals took a 1-0 lead to halftime.

The game remained 1-0 for the first 20 minutes of the second half, until McCauley made it 2-0 in the 56th minute off a pass from junior Jamie Thabault.

Wesleyan made it 3-0 with just under five minutes remaining as Chabot fired home a pass from junior Alex Bean for her third goal. Wesleyan freshman keeper Tori Redding stopped four shots in the Cardinal cage, but her bid for her second shutout in three games was denied as Beaton (West Newbury, Mass.) scored off a feed from sophomore Kelly McManus (Plymouth, N.H.) with 32 seconds remaining for the final score.

Wesleyan held a 17-7 advantage in shots over the visitors, but McEnroe made 12 saves, including seven in the second half, to help keep Bates in the game. Wesleyan also took 16 penalty corners to Bates’ five, including a 10-2 edge in the final half.
