WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- The Bates College field hockey team got on top early in its NESCAC game at Williams College on Saturday, ultimately falling by a 5-2 score to the host Ephs.

Sophomore Jenna Dannis (Milford, N.H.) netted her third goal of the season less than five minutes into the game. Bates senior Morgan Maciewicz (Marblehead, Mass.) made a pass to Dannis off a penalty corner, and Dannis finished the play to make it 1-0 on the game's first shot.

Whitney Thayer scored the equalizer for Williams less than four minutes later, on the first of Anne de Saint Phalle's two assists, starting a run of four unanswered goals for the Ephs that put them ahead 4-1 at intermission, on the strength of a 23-4 shot advantage.

Bates opened the second half with the third goal of the year by first-year Laura Baran (Pittsburgh, Pa.), who scored in traffic off of Maciewicz's second assist of the day. De Saint Phalle closed out the scoring with her first goal of the game, scored in the 50th minute.

Bates junior goalie Katie McEnroe (Hockessin, Del.) stopped 12 Williams shots in the game, while Ephs goalie Katrina Tulla made four saves.

Bates will play a non-conference game at the University of Southern Maine on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
