BUENOS AIRES, Argentina -- The Bates College field hockey team touched down in Argentina on Wednesday for a weeklong trip that head coach Wynn Hohlt says will benefit the group as a team and as individuals in multiple ways.
Thirteen team members are on the excursion, in which the Bobcats will have training sessions with Argentinian coaches, play four matches against club teams from around the area, spend an afternoon doing a service project with a rural children's center, attend a premier-level women's club game, and see "as many of the sights as possible," said Hohlt. "It is a wonderful opportunity to expose the student-athletes to a very foreign culture (not to mention language) and to experience a very high level of hockey, as well as different coaching and different playing styles."
Various team members are regularly checking in from South America on a team blog, at http://batesfieldhockey.blogspot.com/.
The Bobcats will officially open their 2009 season with a home game against NESCAC rival Connecticut College on Saturday, Sept. 12.
