Kazarian, Dannis, Maciewicz score in field hockey loss

LEWISTON, Maine -- A quick lead for the Bates College field hockey team on a Sema Kazarian goal evaporated in a 5-3 loss to Connecticut College on Saturday at Campus Avenue Field, in the season opener for both teams.

The Camels (2-0, 1-0 NESCAC) scored five unanswered goals after spotting the Bobcats (0-1, 0-1) a goal in the opening minute. Junior Abby Hine (Madison, Conn.) scored her first of two goals to tie the game at 1-1, and first-year Kelsey Nickerson (Weston, Mass.) added two more tallies to send the Camels into halftime with a 3-1 edge. All of Connecticut College's first three scores came off of rebounds of saves by Bates' All-NESCAC goalie Katie McEnroe (Hockessin, Del.), who collected 11 saves in the contest.

Camels senior Jen Wallace (Farmington, Maine) made it 4-1 with an unassisted goal less than two minutes into the second half, and then she fed Hine a minute later for a 5-1 edge.

Bates came back within striking distance with two goals off of penalty corners in the final 10 minutes. Sophomore Jenna Dannis (Milford, N.H.) took a pass from first-year Michelle Brady (Milton, Mass.) near the left baseline, turned and ripped a shot inside the far corner to make it 5-2 with 10 minutes left. Senior Morgan Maciewicz (Marblehead, Mass.) knocked in a rebound with six minutes remaining to close the gap to 5-3.

Bates got on the scoreboard first, as junior Sema Kazarian (Providence, R.I.) took a feed from Dannis and redirected it past Connecticut College goalie Kelly Brennan just 37 seconds into the game.

Brennan started and made one save for the Camels, giving way to Steph Quinn, who made four saves in the second half. The teams played evenly in terms of shots taken, with the Camels having a 23-22 edge.

Bates will play host to Babson College for its first non-conference game of the season tomorrow at 12 p.m. Connecticut College will play at Springfield on Sept. 17.
