Rothkopf scores in field hockey season finale

WATERVILLE, Maine -- The Bates College field hockey team's comeback effort was thwarted in a 2-1 NESCAC loss at Colby College Friday in the season finale for both teams.

Bates senior back Sammy Rothkopf (Chicago, Ill.) scored her first goal of the season in the 46th minute on a penalty corner, off of an assist by junior Sema Kazarian (Providence, R.I.) to close the gap to 2-1.

The Mules got a pair of goals in the first half. Heather Quadir (Medfield, Mass.) scored 2:42 into the game for her ninth goal of the season. Kelly Roth (South Deerfield, Mass.) got the ball to Ashley Wagner (Sudbury, Mass.), who pushed the ball to Quadir right in front of the goal for the score.

Hannah O’Brien (Wolfeboro Falls, N.H.) made it 2-0 with 14:42 to play in the first half. Senior back Meghan Saccone (Andover, Mass.) ripped a shot that O’Brien deflected into the goal as she stood at the left post.

Bates junior Katie McEnroe (Hockessin, Del.) stopped eight shots by Colby in the game, while Liz Fontaine had four saves for the Mules. After Colby achieved a 10-5 edge in shots in the first half, Bates evened it up at five apiece in the second period.
