Beaton scores for field hockey in loss to No. 11 Bowdoin





LEWISTON, Maine -- No. 11 nationally ranked Bowdoin College raced out to a 5-0 lead in the first 15 minutes of the game en route to an 8-1 NESCAC win over the Bates College field hockey team on Saturday at Campus Avenue Field.

Bowdoin stayed undefeated at 3-0, including a 2-0 record in conference play. Bates dropped to 0-3 overall and in NESCAC play.

Cathleen Smith scored off an upfield feed from Ingrid Oelschlager just 16 seconds into the game for a 1-0 lead. The Polar Bears added a score on a penalty corner in the sixth minute, their first of five goals scored on corner plays. Katie Herter added an unassisted tally less than a minute later, for a 3-0 lead with 28:43 left in the first period. Oelschlager netted a goal in the 13th minute, and Brooke Phinney fed Elizabeth Clegg on a penalty corner score for a 5-0 Bowdoin lead with 20:49 still left in the period.

Herter and Katie Riley scored two goals apiece for Bowdoin, while Smith added a goal and two assists. Oelschlager scored once and helped on another.

Bates junior Lyndsay Beaton (West Newbury, Mass.) scored the Bobcats' lone goal with 28:18 left in the second period on a penalty corner. Junior Kelly McManus (Plymouth, N.H.) inserted and senior Sema Kazarian (Providence, R.I.) teed up Beaton's shot, which rocketed past Bowdoin reserve goalie Kayla Lessard to close the deficit to 6-1. Riley scored a pair of goals in the final five minutes of the game, both on penalty corners assisted by Jessie Small.

Bates senior Katie McEnroe (Hockessin, Del.) made a career-high 22 saves in the game, amidst a 49-5 advantage in shots taken for Bowdoin. Emily Neilson started in goal for Bowdoin and recorded no saves. Lessard played the second half and made one save.
