Beaton scores in field hockey loss to No. 18 Wesleyan

LEWISTON, Maine -- No. 18 nationally ranked Wesleyan University jumped out to a 2-0 first-half lead and went on to a 4-1 NESCAC win over the Bates College field hockey team on Saturday at Campus Avenue Field.

Wesleyan (8-2, 4-2 NESCAC) received a goal and an assist from both Morgan McCauley and Liz Chabot. Chabot's seventh goal of the season, set up by McCauley on a penalty corner, gave Wesleyan a 2-0 lead in the 10th minute of the game, after Taryn Murray opened up the scoring, tipping the ball in on an Ashley McLaren assist. Chabot set up McCauley in the 58th minute to cap the day's scoring.

Bates (3-8, 1-6 NESCAC) junior Lyndsay Beaton (West Newbury, Mass.) scored the Bobcats' lone goal, closing the gap to 2-1 on a penalty corner shot set up by Kelly McManus's (Plymouth, N.H.) insertion and senior Sema Kazarian's (Providence, R.I.) stop. It was Beaton's team-high sixth goal of the season, and the team-high fourth assists for both Kazarian and McManus.

The game remained 2-1 for the remainder of the half and into the second half, before Wesleyan broke a 33-minute scoreless stretch for both teams with 19 minutes remaining in the game. McCauley finished the scoring for Wesleyan as she snuck a ball past Bates keeper Katie McEnroe (Hockessin, Del.) with 12 minutes left in the game.

McEnroe played a strong game for the Bobcats, recording 15 saves. The Bobcat defense also limited Wesleyan opportunities, as sophomore Alie Philip (Simsbury, Conn.) recorded two defensive saves and senior Zoe Donaldson (Bronxville, N.Y.) and first-year Lexie Carter (Saco, Maine) each recorded one.

Wesleyan outshot Bates 28-15, and earned eight penalty corners to Bates' seven.

The Bobcats look to rebound in a non-conference matchup with New England College on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
