Field hockey blasts Southern Maine, 3-0

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College field hockey team won for the second time in three games with a 3-0 non-conference defeat of the University of Southern Maine on Wednesday.

The Bobcats (3-7) scored all three of their goals in the first half and cruised on to victory, dominating both halves with a 17-8 difference in shots in the first half and a 16-4 edge in the second half.

The Huskies' third loss in a row dropped them to 5-10 on the season.

Bates junior Lyndsay Beaton (West Newbury, Mass.) scored first, deflecting a shot by sophomore Michelle Brady (Milton, Mass.) past USM senior goalkeeper Rachel Lolley (Gorham, Maine). Beaton increased her team scoring lead with her fifth goal.

Brady netted her second goal of the season with 17:03 left in the half, controlling the rebound after Lolley stopped a penalty corner shot and blasting it home for a 2-0 lead.

The Bobcats made it 3-0 with 9:48 left in the period, when a simple pass and shoot in front of the USM goal was executed by senior Sema Kazarian (Providence, R.I.) to sophomore Laura Baran (Pittsburgh, Pa.), who scored her first goal of the season.

Lolley made one save before being relieved by first-year Kayla Kennedy (Windham, Maine), who shut out Bates with nine saves in her 42-plus minutes of work. Bates senior Katie McEnroe (Hockessin, Del.) made five saves in her third shutout of the season. Bates senior captain Zoe Donaldson (Bronxville, N.Y.) picked up her fourth defensive save of the season.

Bates plays host to Wesleyan in a NESCAC matchup on Saturday at noon; follow the game via Live Video Webcast.
