LEWISTON, Maine -- Katie McMahon (Denville, N.J.) scored two goals and assisted on two others to lead No. 14 nationally ranked Amherst College to a 5-1 NESCAC win over the Bates College field hockey team on Sunday at Campus Avenue Field.

The Lord Jeffs earned their first win to improve to 1-1 on the season and 1-1 in conference play, while Bates dropped to 0-2, 0-2.

Amherst put on a dominating performance in the first half, taking advantage of 16 penalty corners in the period and converting four of them into goals for a 4-0 lead at intermission. McMahon set up a pair of goals by Carly Dudzik (Darien, Conn.), one in the second minute of play and another in the 28th minute, then blasted home a goal off a rebounded save in the 33rd minute to make it 4-0. Carly Leahy (Weston, Mass.) also netted a goal off a rebound in the 17th minute. Amherst outshot Bates 16-2 in the first half.

Bates picked up play significantly in the second half and battled the Lord Jeffs to a stalemate in the period. McMahon scored Amherst's lone field goal with 19:27 left in the game, knocking in yet another rebounded save by Bates senior goalie Katie McEnroe (Hockessin, Del.), for a 5-0 lead.

Bates junior Lyndsay Beaton (West Newbury, Mass.) netted the Bobcats' first goal of the young season with just over a minute left, when she followed up a save by Amherst goalie Sarah Wise (Akron, Ohio) of sophomore Michelle Brady's (Milton, Mass.) shot by knocking in the ensuing loose ball in front of the goal.

McEnroe made 17 saves for Bates, a day after racking up a personal-record 20 saves in a loss to Connecticut College. Wise turned away two shots for the Lord Jeffs.

Amherst achieved a 33-6 advantage in shots taken and a 19-5 edge in penalty corners.
