MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- Behind a four-goal performance by Liz Chabot, Wesleyan University rolled to a 7-1 field hockey victory over Bates College on Saturday afternoon. With the win, Wesleyan improved to 6-4 and 3-4 in NESCAC action, while Bates fell to 2-7 and 1-5 in conference play.
Wesleyan jumped on the board just 1:09 into the contest as Morgan McCauley put home a rebound for her team-leading eighth goal. Following a corner, Bates sophomore keeper Becca Otley (Cumberland, Maine) saved a shot by Wesleyan junior Ashley McLaren. The Cardinals' first follow-up attempt was blocked, but McCauley corralled the ball and put it home.
Chabot made it 2-0 with 4:58 gone, taking possession of the ball in the midfield area and going straight to the goal. She added another goal with 11:30 left in the half for a 3-0 lead, scoring from right in front of the cage after a pass from McLaren, and McCauley scored an unassisted tally with 3:54 left for a 4-0 halftime lead.
Bates jumped on the board 1:50 into the second half, as senior Lyndsay Beaton (West Newbury, Mass.) beat a Wesleyan defender and scored from the right side for her team-high fourth goal. Taryn Murray answered four minutes later, and Chabot added a pair of goals, the last coming at the 46:43 mark, for the 7-1 final. Chabot now has seven goals on the season.
Otley finished with five saves in the first half, while freshman Kelsey Freedman (Falmouth, Maine) made three stops after playing the entire second half. Tori Redding had five saves in the Wesleyan net, four of which came in the second half.
Bates returns to action on Tuesday at Southern Maine.
