BANGOR, Maine -- Mariah Arno scored with 48 seconds left in regulation time, giving Husson University a 3-2 non-conference win over the Bates field hockey team on Wednesday at Winkin Complex. Bates outshot Husson by a 20-10 margin in the game.
Arno had an assist as well, while Sabrina Vallancourt tallied the first two Eagle scores. Kristen Capen had 10 saves while earning the victory.
Vallancourt got the scoring started at the 19:49 mark. The Bobcats answered back with no time left on the clock in the first half. A corner was initiated before the period ended, leaving an untimed play for Bates. Off the corner, sophomore Sarah Warden (North Andover, Mass.) found first-year Caroline Falcone (New Canaan, Conn.) to tie the game at the half.
In the second half, the Eagles regained the lead when Vallancourt got her second just 2 minutes into the period.
Senior captain Sarah Merullo (Essex, Mass.) tied the game again with over 25 minutes left to play, and the Bobcats had plenty of traffic in front of Capen on the play. Bates kept up the pressure in the half, outshooting Husson 11-6 in the second half, but the Eagle defense stood strong.
Husson had a pair of corners in the last two minutes and converted on their final scoring chance when Arno collected a loose ball and scored with just 48 seconds remaining. Bates tried to mount another comeback, and had a chance late, but ran out of time.
First-year Kelsey Freedman (Falmouth, Maine) started in goal for Bates and registered five saves.
