No. 17 Trinity gets past field hockey, 2-0

LEWISTON, Maine -- No. 17 nationally ranked Trinity College controlled play with a 26-9 advantage in shots attempted en route to a 2-0 NESCAC victory over host Bates College on Sunday at Campus Avenue Field.

Trinity (3-0, 3-0 NESCAC) attempted the first six shots of the game and 11 of the 12 taken in the first half. Tough defense and some excellent, aggressive goalkeeping by junior Becca Otley (Falmouth, Maine) held the Bantams scoreless until the 23rd minute, when the Bantams converted a penalty corner play, with Haley Thompson shoveling a nice pass across the top of the circle to Sarah Duncan for a hard shot past Otley. The final 12 minutes of the period included just one shot for either team, with Otley stopping Trinity's Shannon Ryan from increasing the lead, and the Bantams took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

Bates bounced back with a much better effort in the second half, with eight shot attempts to Trinity's 15 and a 5-4 edge in penalty corners in the period. But Trinity's lead wasn't threatened before Hadley Duncan jammed in a close-range shot in a scramble near the Bates goal.

Junior back Lexie Carter (Saco, Maine) recorded a defensive save, and junior Polly Merck (Beverly Farms, Mass.) attempted a team-high four shots.

Bates (1-3, 0-3 NESCAC) plays a non-conference game at Babson next Sunday, Sept. 23, at 1pm.
