LEWISTON, Maine -- Eva Rosencrans knocked in the rebound on a save early in the first overtime period, giving Hamilton College a 2-1 NESCAC victory over the Bates College field hockey team on Saturday at Campus Avenue Field.
An initial shot by Hamilton's Emma Anderson, just over a minute into overtime, was diverted by Bates junior goalkeeper Katie Knox (Bronxville, N.Y.). Rosencrans was there to collect the loose ball off of the left goal post, and sent the ball inside the near post to end the game.
The host Bobcats (0-2, 0-2 NESCAC) suffered the hard-luck loss after outshooting the Continentals (2-1, 1-1 NESCAC) by a 30-12 margin. The Bobcats also missed a penalty stroke late in the second half that would have ultimately decided the game for the hosts.
Bates assumed a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute. The play began with senior defender Jill Conway's (Andover, Mass.) open-field takeaway behind the midfield line. Conway forwarded the ball to sophomore Sydney Cowles (Wayne, Pa.), who carried the ball briefly before sending a through upfield to junior Shannon Beaton (West Newbury, Mass.), who carried the ball into the circle and smacked the ball past Hamilton goalie Victoria Trentini.
With Conway patrolling the defensive backfield, Bates controlled play for most of regulation time and piled up the shot attempts, though too many went wide of the goal. Bates had a 9-3 advantage in shots on goal during regulation.
With 20:30 left in regulation, Hamilton set up for its fourth penalty corner of the game. Emma Anderson inserted the ball with a pass to Aubrey Coon, who stopped the ball for Sam Sherman's slapshot that got past Knox to tie the game 1-1.
Trentini made three saves over the final 20 minutes to help preserve the tie for the Continentals, but she didn't need to make the save on Bates' best chance to regain the lead: with 5:11 left on the clock, Bates was awarded a penalty stroke. Bates sophomore Claire Markonic (Millerton, N.Y.) hit a rising ball that caromed off of the left post.
Trentini made seven saves for Hamilton. For Bates, junior Cristina Vega (Needham, Mass.) started in goal and made one save in a shutout first half. Knox played the second half and overtime and made two saves.
Bates plays at top-ranked Bowdoin on Wednesday at 7pm.
