Field hockey holds No. 2 Bowdoin close for a half, falls 5-0

LEWISTON, Maine -- The No. 2 nationally ranked Bowdoin field hockey team turned a 1-0 lead at halftime into a 4-0 advantage seven minutes into the second half, defeating Bates College 5-0 in a NESCAC game played at Campus Avenue Field on Tuesday night.

The Polar Bears (3-0, 2-0 NESCAC) received three goals from Rachel Kennedy and two from Kimmy Ganong in the tidy victory. Bowdoin outshot Bates by a 26-3 margin and collected 12 penalty corners to Bates' two.

Kennedy scored her team-high fourth goal of the season in the sixth minute, banging in a shot on their third penalty corner in the early going, from an assist by Kelsey Mullaney. It would be all the scoring Bowdoin would need, but Bates managed two penalty corners and two shots before halftime, while senior goalie Cristina Vega's (Needham, Mass.) four saves in the period kept the deficit at one.

Bowdoin changed the script swiftly after intermission, with Kennedy feeding Liz Znamierowski, who in turn passed to Ganong for her second goal of the year, just 42 seconds in. Kennedy added her second tally, an unassisted goal, 93 seconds later to make it 3-0.

Bowdoin earned its second penalty corner of the period with 28:49 to go, and Juliana Fiore's shot passed wide of the Bates cage. But a minute later, Ganong scored unassisted for a 4-0 Bowdoin advantage, prompting a Bates timeout. Just a minute after the break, however, Kennedy made it a hat trick with another unassisted tally for the 5-0 lead. Bowdoin outshot Bates 16-1 in the second half, with the Bobcats' lone attempt coming in the waning seconds with senior Shannon Beaton's (West Newbury, Mass.) attempt skidding wide right.

Bowdoin will host Wesleyan Saturday in a NESCAC game at 11am. Bates will resume its suspended game against Husson on Friday at 8pm. Bates holds a 4-0 lead with 10:52 to go in the first half.
