LEWISTON, Maine -- Pam Schulman and Annie Leonard scored two goals apiece to lead No. 3 nationally ranked Middlebury to a 5-0 NESCAC victory over the Bates field hockey team on Saturday, overcoming a strong effort by the host Bobcats' defense.
The Panthers (13-1, 8-1 NESCAC) won their ninth straight game, the last five of which have been shutouts. Middlebury outshot Bates by a 13-1 margin, requiring no saves from goalie Emily Miller in her fifth shutout of the season.
Annie Leonard struck first for Middlebury in the 12th minute on an assist from Grace Jennings. Leonard leads Middlebury with 14 goals, and Jennings has a team-high 10 assists.
Middlebury's third of eight penalty corners in the game resulted in a 2-0 lead in the 14th minute, as Lauren Berestecky fed Schulman for her first tally and her 12th of the season. With about eight minutes remaining in the period, Schulman scored on a penalty stroke to make it 3-0 at the half.
Both teams were scoreless over a stretch of more than 34 minutes, but Leonard struck again in the 62nd minute, scoring on a reverse chip into the left corner off of Bates goalie Cristina Vega. A minute and a half later, the Panthers made it 5-0 as Audrey Quirk assisted Susanna Baker.
Vega made one save for Bates in the second half; Katie Knox started in goal for Bates and made three saves in the first half.
Bates plays at Colby on Wednesday at 7pm and Middlebury hosts Williams on Wednesday at 6pm to wrap up the regular season.
