Men's golf places sixth at Bowdoin Invitational



BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The Bates College men's golf squad finished sixth out of 14 teams in a competitive field at the Bowdoin Invitational, which wrapped up Sunday at Brunswick Golf Course.

Bates' two-day team score was 648, just four strokes behind fifth-place Southern Maine (644) and seven behind Bowdoin (641). The Bobcats topped Tufts by five strokes. Husson won the tournament with a 599, followed by Saint Anselm at 614.

First-year Lee Smith (Lexington, Mass.) shot a team-best 78 on Sunday for a two-day score of 159. Sophomore Mike Kelen (Baltimore, Md.) carded a 79 to tie Smith for the team lead in overall score at 159. Both men tied for 15th overall out of 68 competitors.

Junior Kurt Schuler (Windham, N.H.), who led the Bobcats with a 4-over-par 76 on Saturday, carded a two-day score of 164. Sophomore John Canney (North Clarendon, Vt.) followed with a 166, and senior captain Jeremy Rogalski (West Springfield, Mass.) carded a 178.

Bates next competes at the UMaine-Farmington Invitational on Wednesday at Belgrade Lakes C.C., followed by the Maine Intercollegiate Championship this weekend at Natanis G.C.
