Men's golf rises to sixth place at competitive Bowdoin invite
BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Amidst tight competition, the Bates men's golf team rose from seventh to sixth place out of nine teams on Sunday, the second day of the 2010 season-opening Bowdoin Invitational at Brunswick Golf Club.
After shooting an aggregate score of 330 during first-round play on Saturday, the Bobcats carded a team score of 326 on Sunday to move ahead of Tufts in the standings, and just one stroke behind the host Polar Bears. Williams and Husson tied atop the board at 319 apiece, followed by St. Anselm (623), Endicott (635), Bowdoin (655), Bates (656), Southern Maine (657), Tufts (666) and Brandeis (710).
Senior captain Mike Kelen (Baltimore, Md.) followed up his 78 on Saturday with an 80 on Sunday, finishing in a tie for 10th place out of 56 players with Drew Murray of williams. Junior Lee Smith (Lexington, Mass.) carded a 79 on Sunday to finish at 162 overall. First-year Garrett Johnson (Lexington, Mass.) shot an 82 to end up at 168, tied with sophomore teammate Jared Quenzel (West Hartford, Conn.) at 168.
The Bates men next play at the Farmington Invitational on Thursday at Sunday River G.C., followed on Friday by the state championships at Boothbay G.C. The Bates women compete at the UMF Invitational on Sunday at Wilson Lake Country Club in Wilton.
