Men's golf a stroke behind third place at state championships





CUMBERLAND, Maine -- Junior Jared Quenzel tied for eighth place overall, earning All-State honors and leading the Bates men's golf team to fifth place out of 11 teams at Sunday's conclusion of the Maine State Intercollegiate Championships, held at Val Halla Golf Club.

The Bobcats finished fifth for the second straight year but were only a single stroke out of a three-way tie for third place with the University of New England and Southern Maine. Husson won the tournament by 36 strokes over runner-up Bowdoin.

Quenzel (West Hartford, Conn.) shot a 75 on Saturday and followed with an 80 on Sunday to tie with Husson's Tim Carlson and UMaine-Presque Isle's Reynold Brown for eighth place, earning his first all-state honors.

Senior captain Lee Smith's (Lexington, Mass.) 164 tied for 20th place out of 53 players, while sophomore Garrett Johnson (Lexington, Mass.) 166 put him in a four-way tie for 27th and junior Corey Gingras (Eastford, Conn.) tied for 31st place at 167.

The Bates men next compete at the Colby Classic on Saturday at 12 p.m.
