Quenzel, Johnson lead men's golf to 7th place at Bowdoin invite

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The Bates men's golf team shot one stroke better on Sunday than it did on Saturday at the 10-team Bowdoin Invitational, played at Brunswick Golf Club. The Bobcats shot a 335 for a seventh-place team finish at 671.

Junior Jared Quenzel (West Hartford, Conn.) shot an 82 to finish in a tie for ninth among all 54 players with a two-day score of 158. Sophomore Garrett Johnson (Lexington, Mass.) scored an 81, best on the squad for the day, to finish tied for 23rd place overall.

Senior captain Lee Smith (Lexington, Mass.) shot an 87 on Sunday to finish 38th overall, followed right behind by junior Corey Gingras (Eastford, Conn.), who sliced four strokes off his Saturday score with an 85.

Saturday Recap

Quenzel shot a 76, trailing only Chris Hamel of Husson (71) and Tyler Fay of St. Anselm (72), and tied with Bowdoin's Johnny Bohorquez and Tufts' Seb Vik for third place on the first day of the tournament.

Garrett Johnson shot an 85, while Lee Smith carded an 86. Corey Gingras scored an 89 to round out Bates' team scoring at 336, one stroke behind Southern Maine and ahead of UMaine-Farmington (344), Tufts (347) and Brandeis (386). First-year Garret Bonney (Sudbury, Mass.) shot a 92 in his collegiate debut.
