NEWRY, Maine -- Sophomore Garret Bonney led the Bates men's golf team with an 85, as the Bobcats competed in the UMaine-Farmington Golf Invitational at Sunday River Golf Club on Thursday morning.
Bonney (Sudbury, Mass.) carded a 43 on the front nine and a 42 on the back at the par 72 course to tie for 13th place out of 39 players. Senior newcomer to the team Kevin Shaughnessy (Ridgefield, Conn.) placed second on the team with a 93, followed by junior Zach Abbott (Rangeley, Maine) with a 97 and sophomore Nick McCarthy (Winnetka, Ill.) with a 98.
UMF's Orion Cochrane, Hussons's William Hutchins and Southern Maine's Josh Hogan tied for medalist honors at 76 apiece.
Bates, the only team among the eight there to field only four players, finished eighth in the eight-team tournament with a collective score of 373. USM claimed first place at 319.
The Bates men play Saturday at the Husson Invitational, beginning at 10am at Penobscot Valley Country Club in Orono. The women's golf team will host Bowdoin on Saturday at Martindale Country Club in Auburn at 11am.
