BREWSTER, Mass. -- The Bates men's golf team finished 29th out of 35 teams overall, and 16th among 22 Division III squads, on Sunday at the 78th annual NEIGA Championship. The tournament was shortened from two days to one at The Captain's Course due to the threat of Hurricane Sandy.
The Bobcats outscored Suffolk University 344 to 345 for 29th place, and also outplayed the likes of Elms (349), Anna Maria (350), Wesleyan (351), St. Joseph's College of Maine (374) and Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (377). The Bobcats were three strokes shy of tying for 27th along with Worcester State and Division II St. Michael's.
Senior captain Jared Quenzel (West Hartford, Conn.) shot a 9-over-par 81, tying with 10 other players to place 51st among 171 competitors. Senior Corey Gingras (Eastford, Conn.) shot a plus-12 84 in his final tournament for Bates, tying for 87th overall. junior Garrett Johnson (Lexington, Mass.) carded an 87 to tie for 127th, and sophomore Garret Bonney (Sudbury, Mass.) rounded out Bates' scoring with a 92, tying for 150th. Senior Kevin Shaughnessy (Ridgefield, Conn.) scored a 94.
The Bobcats improved their standing from last year's 32nd-place finish.
