AMHERST, Mass. -- The Bates men's golf team stands in eighth place among 10 teams after the first of two days in the NESCAC Golf Fall Qualifier, hosted by Amherst College at par 72 Hickory Ridge Golf Club.
Bates seniors Corey Gingras (Eastford, Conn.) and Jared Quenzel (West Hartford, Conn.) paced the Bobcats on the first day, shooting an 80 and an 81, respectively. Gingras is tied for 20th place and Quenzel is tied for 24th out of 50 players in the tournament.
Sophomore Garret Bonney (Sudbury, Mass.) is tied for 35th with an 83, and senior Kevin Shaughnessy (Ridgefield, Conn.) is tied for 39th at 84.
With four golfers in the top 10, Trinity closed out the day in the lead with a team total of 304. Hamilton finished two shots back (306), while last year’s qualifier winner, Williams, sits in third (307) with three of its players ranking in the top 10. Defending champion Middlebury, which captured the 2008 and 2010 fall qualifiers, currently ranks fourth with a team total of 314, while host Amherst and Colby each finished the first round of play with a team score of 321. Bowdoin (324) and Bates (328) sit seventh and eighth, respectively, while Tufts (331) and Wesleyan (349) round out the field of 10.
Play resumes tomorrow at 10:15 a.m. The highest finisher at the two-day, 36-hole event earns the right to host the spring championship round at its home course along with the remaining top three teams from the qualifier.
The Bobcats tied for seventh place at last year's NESCAC Fall Qualifier.
